Local Doctors Focus on Children’s Diet and Lifestyle

Dr. Stacey Munro of Suffield and Dr. Karen Conway of Agawam, Massachusetts, have made it a priority to improve children’s dietary and lifestyle habits. Mental and dietary “junk foods” have a negative impact on a child’s physical, emotional and behavioral health.

Munro, a naturopathic physician, works with children and their parents to improve these dietary and lifestyle habits. “Naturopathic physicians and pediatricians agree upon limiting processed food and screen time,” she says. “Fast food and snack foods marketed to children are nearly always processed, and these foods are nutritionally devoid. To make a healthy first step, start with breakfast that includes protein and whole grains.”

She also recommends setting clear boundaries regarding screen time, in accordance with the American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP) guidelines: Avoid use of screen media other than video-chatting for children younger than 18 months; for children 18 to 24 months, find high-quality programming and co-view with them, if you choose to give them screen time at all; limit screen use to one hour per day for children ages 2 to 5 years; and create a family media plan with consistent rules and enforce them for older kids.

“Getting children on a healthier track requires knowledge and a good strategy,” says Conway, a general pediatrician. “The family pediatrician is a beneficial source of information, and a naturopath can help with dietary and lifestyle specifics.”
